Behind the
Miles Ahead Project
Hi, I’m Betsy (she/they).
I’m the founder of the Miles Ahead Project. (And that very good dog is Gwen.)
Throughout my career, I’ve had the privilege of working with a wide range of organizations—from national nonprofits to grassroots community groups—helping them amplify their voices and drive meaningful change. My experience in strategic communications, graphic design, and digital accessibility has given me deep insights into what inspires and enables people to take action—whether that’s supporting a cause, advocating for change, or simply connecting with a message.
I have always felt that the work I do is deeply creative. And running has always provided inspiration for new ideas and a space for me to think through challenges, while also being a source of much-needed work-life balance. This is why I’m excited to blend my passion for nonprofit communications with my love for running with the Miles Ahead Project.
Whether crafting a digital campaign or designing a personalized training plan, my goal remains the same: to inspire and support others in reaching their goals both personally and professionally.

As Seen in Running Flow
Betsy’s one-day summit of Costa Rica’s Cerro Chirripó was featured in Running Flow: Mental Immersion Techniques for Better Running (link opens in a new tab) by Mihaly Csikszentmihalyi, Philip Latter, and Christine Weinkauff Duranso.
Her experience serves as an example of how recreational runners can use mental techniques and training to reach a flow state during challenging runs—techniques Betsy now shares with her athletes.

The Path Forward: Building a Future Where Every Runner Feels Safe and Represented
As we move forward, we must be vigilant to the ways we (white, non-disabled, cis, thin) white women are pressured to leave people behind. And we must resist.

Participating in running events is a great way to support causes that matter to you. But how can we choose organizations that align with our values, ensuring our efforts in races and fundraisers make a meaningful impact.

Leading with Vision: Parting the Clouds to Inspire Action
I’m struck by how important it is to have a clear view—not just in running, but in our work in nonprofits. How do we keep that vision front and center, especially when things get foggy?

Land Acknowledgement
The Miles Ahead Project is based on the ancestral lands of the Cherokee people, specifically the Eastern Band of Cherokee Indians (EBCI). This land, known as Tsalagi Ayehli (Cherokee Nation territory), has been home to the Cherokee for millennia. We recognize that the trails we run today are part of a long history of human movement through these mountains and valleys, spanning thousands of years.
We strive to honor the deep connection between the Cherokee people and this land, encompassing language, culture, and traditional practices and acknowledge their resilience and ongoing presence despite a history of forced removal and displacement.
We are mindful that we run, work, and live on Indigenous land. This awareness compels us to commit to:
- Learning about and respecting Cherokee history and culture
- Supporting Cherokee-led initiatives, including the Center for Native Health (link opens in new tab.)
- Practicing responsible and respectful use of the land and trails
The Miles Ahead Project is committed to going beyond mere acknowledgement and invite all our clients, partners, and fellow runners to join us in reflecting on our relationship with the land and consider how we can contribute to a more just and equitable future for Indigenous peoples.
