Leading with Vision: Parting the Clouds to Inspire Action

When I’m running, it’s often the views that keep me going. I crave those scenic photos at the top of the hill! I want to see where I’m headed and feel excited about what’s next. This was definitely true when I completed the Rim-to-Rim-to-Rim (R2R2R) at the Grand Canyon. My curiosity about what might lie around the next turn was so strong that it sometimes made me forget how hard the run was and how tired I was feeling.

But on my very first run in the Italian Dolomites, things were different. The weather was terrible—rainy, foggy, and I couldn’t see a thing. The feeling of being socked in dampened my motivation, and I found myself wanting to turn back to something familiar. Then, suddenly, the fog lifted, and I realized I had been surrounded by breathtaking rocky peaks and stunning views all along. I kept moving forward and my pace quickened. I couldn’t wait to see and experience more!

Reflecting on that experience, I’m struck by how important it is to have a clear view—not just in running, but in our work in nonprofits. How do we keep that vision front and center, especially when things get foggy?

Studies show that repeating false information—even when we’re trying to refute it—can make people more likely to believe it.

As nonprofit communicators, it’s easy to fall into the trap of reacting to misinformation. We want to debunk myths, correct the narrative, and address falsehoods head-on. But often, in doing so, we repeat the very language and talking points we’re trying to counter. And instead of clearing things up, we may be adding to the fog.

Studies show that repeating false information—even when we’re trying to refute it—can increase the likelihood that people will believe it. The more we repeat harmful narratives and language, the more we risk reinforcing them.

So what should we do instead? We must lead with our vision. A vision rooted in our communities, one that reflects their values and aspirations, can help lift the fog. By staying focused on where we’re headed and the positive change we’re striving for, we can inspire others to join us, and help keep them excited to move forward with us. Consistently communicating a clear, compelling vision will motivate people to get involved and support your cause, because they’ll want to help achieve that future.

Leading with and sharing your vision will part the clouds and show the way forward. Don’t get distracted and let things get cloudy. Keep moving toward the goal, one step at a time.
